guide on what kind of laptop or desktop to buy

Let me welcome you to the Ross family. One of our vendors, CDWG, created a laptop package deal for our students. The package offers IBM laptops and can be viewed at http://www.cdwg.com/ross

Generally speaking any laptop with similar specifications as those listed below can be used on campus. Some of the brands used by students currently include Sony, HP Compaq, Dell, Toshiba, Acer, Apple and IBM.

Laptop Specification:

  • at least 80 GB Harddrive
  • at least 1 GB RAM (2 GB if you are running Vista. 3GB if affordable)
  • at least 3 GHz processor intel (single) or 1.8 Ghz duo processor (intel)
  • DVD reader/CD burner (DVD reader/burner recommended if you are not exceeding 1800 or your budget [whatever is lower])
  • Windows XP professional or Vista
  • MS Office 2003 or 2007 (package must include MS Word, Powerpoint and Excel as they are use heavily on campus.)
  • In-built wireless capability
  • Antivirus program
  • Recommend obtaining warranty for more than 1 year if affordable
  • Should not spend more than US 1,800 (unless it is a Mac that is typically more expensive than PC laptops)

Yes we support Windows Vista.
Importantly I would recommend obtaining MS Office 2003/2007 as Word and Powerpoint are use heavily on campus. As it relates to your printing need, having a personal printer will allow you to do printing off campus. But I would list it as a convenience. Investing in a wireless router would give you the ability to work freely in anywhere your apartment; students who reside of-campus here list this as important. I hope I was able to address your immediate concerns and look forward to meeting you when you arrive on island

Mac support
Macs are supported as well. However the support is mainly around software and network access. Our hardware support is limited and we are working to improve that. Mac users can access the school’s network and its learning resources.
If you have any questions or need clarification, please contact me via email.
